Description: Design Preservation Models' O scale/gauge Birdie's Tavern looks like saloons I've been in in towns and cities all over this country. That's the thing about this two-story Victorian commercial structure: It fits right in just about anywhere, and just about everywhere, including sandwiched between two of Walthers' Cornerstone buildings such as Melissa's Deli and the Silver Dollar Cafe. They're all approximately the same size and architectural style. Birdie's Tavern is 6-3/4 x 4-1/2 inches x 7 inches high. The Walthers storefronts are 8 x 5-1/4 inches (excluding overhangs) and 8 inches tall. The small difference in height and window levels will be typical of commercial street blocks. The high-quality DPM castings are polyurethane which is hard, rigid, and reproduces detail sharply and accurately. They're not painted but colored ivory or yellow and take paint readily, so you can make them any color you like. The kit is new. in excellent condition and has not been started. All components appear to be present. Box shows some wear. I'm not a box collector so I could care less about the box. I'm more interested in the condition and completeness of its contents, but that's just me. I mention the box's condition only for full disclosure. Putting the building together is not difficult, takes no special skills or tools. Glue holds everything together. No one, not even someone with little or no experience building models from kits, should have any difficulty assembling this structure. Instructions are included. Adding shoppers, pedestrians, maybe a policeman or a mailman, sidewalk details such as mail boxes, phone booths, fire hydrants, street lights, and motor vehicles (none of which are included) will bring this attractive structure to life. And you don't have to use it as a tavern. It could be almost any commercial/retail store, maybe a drug store, or a furniture store, a restaurant, a dress store, hardware store, fruit and vegetable store, maybe even a barber shop. What ever you like or need. It's up to you and limited only by your imagination. Upstairs could be apartments with drapes and shades in the windows, or offices with shades and signs in the windows. How about a painless dentist, a chiropractor, an accountant, a dance or ballet school, typewriter repair, or a newspaper office? Lighting and detailing the interior would extend the fun of building this structure, enhance its appeal and could be a challenge to find the figures and details to do it. Signs are not included but will make this building distinctive. Stores often had signs as wide as the building over the display windows and door. Some times those signs were so large they covered part of the upstairs windows. Hanging signs often were symbols of the store's business, such as a large fish for a fish store, a large eye or giant eyeglass frame for an optometrist, three gold or brass balls for a pawn shop, or a red and white-striped revolving pole for a barber. It would be fun making such a sign for this building. And don't forget awnings, or even roofs over the sidewalk. There's a lot that can be done with this building to customize it and make it unique. I'm not sure the DPM buildings are still being manufactured. If not, then what's been made is all there is and it's now all the hands of other modelers. If you want one, you'll have to wait for one of them to sell. For a particular model, that could be a while. Best bet, like so much in O scale today, is to buy it when you see it for sale. Who knows when you'll see it again. And if and when you do, you can be pretty sure it will cost more than now. HOW TO BEAT SNIPERS. If you're as fed up as I am with snipers beating you out time after time at the last minute for an item you want, then "MAKE AN OFFER" IS YOUR BETTER BET. No snipers. No one topping your bid. It's really your best chance for getting what you want at the price you want. I do it all the time and I'm frequently surprised how successful I am bidding that way. You should try. The fact that a seller offers the "Buy it Now" option should say to you that he's willing to accept something less than his "Buy It Now" price. How much less? Well, probably not a great deal less, like 50 percent. That's just unrealistic. But 10 percent is a more likely amount and sometimes it's more! Don't be put off if the seller comes back to you with a counter offer. That's horse tradin'. And that's fun too. Why don't you GIVE IT A TRY.
