Daniel Morgan - RARE Autograph Letter Signed - Sends His Slave to Acquire Money

Description: DANIEL MORGAN. Daniel Morgan (1736–1802) was an American pioneer, soldier, and congressman from Virginia considered one of the most gifted battlefield tacticians of the Revolutionary War. He defeated Banastre Tarleton at the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781 forcing Charles Cornwallis to pull his troops out of South Carolina and move them farther north. Tarleton and Cornwallis later surrendered at the Battle of Yorktown in October 1781 putting an end to the war. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY DANIEL MORGAN SENDING HIS SLAVE TO ACQUIRE MONEY FROM A MERCHANT WHO SOLD HIS FLOWER Autograph letter signed by Daniel Morgan sending his slave, John Smith, to acquire money from a merchant, David Alison of Falmouth, VA, who sold his flower: “Dr. Sir, Please send by the bearer of this John Smith the money you were kind enough to sell my flower for, and when every [sic] I have it in my power to serve you I will do it with pleasure. I am, Dr. sir, Hble. servt., Danl. Morgan.” Smith acknowledges he received the funds by signing with his mark below the letter: “Falmouth, Novr. 11th, 1784, Received of David Mason twenty three Pound Fifteen Shilling upon amount Daniel Morgan Esqr. His John X Smith mark.” MORGAN’S SLAVE, JOHN SMITH, SIGNS HIS MARK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE LETTER ACKNOWLEDGING HE RECEIVED THE FUNDS Sent to the merchant David Alison of Falmouth, VA, contains one page with the cover panel in Morgan’s hand on the verso, red wax seal, measures 9.125 by 7.25 inches, created on November 7, 1784, and in very good condition with staining, soiling, and three small pieces of tape on the left border on the verso.
