The Nootka Cypress, also known as Weeping Alaskan Cedar, is a stunning, pyramidal tree that adds an elegant touch to any landscape. This graceful conifer features flat sprays of blue-green foliage that hang delicately from horizontal branches, creating a captivating, weeping appearance. Native to the moist bottomlands and ravines of northern California and the Pacific coast of Alaska, this tree is an excellent choice as a specimen or accent tree, particularly for narrow or small spaces. In its native habitat, the Nootka Cypress can reach an impressive height of 100 feet with a width of 30 feet, living for an extraordinary 1000 years. In home gardens, however, it grows more modestly, attaining about 15 feet in height and 4 feet in width within 10 years, and eventually reaching approximately 35 feet by 12 feet. Its upright trunk nods gracefully at the top, while the foliage consists of flat sprays of overlapping blue-green scales. This gives the tree its distinctive, dramatic weeping form. Tiny, one-third to one-half-inch reddish-purple cones appear at the ends of branchlets, turning brown as the season progresses. The reddish-brown bark peels off in sheets, adding an additional layer of interest to this already captivating tree. The Nootka Cypress thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 7, preferring sun to partial shade. It requires consistently moist, well-draining, acidic soil, similar to its native environment. Regular watering is essential during the establishment period and throughout dry spells, and a layer of mulch at the base helps maintain soil moisture and minimize weeds. In northern areas (zones 4 to 6), it performs best in full sun, sheltered from harsh winter winds that can dry out its foliage. In the warmer zone 7, it benefits from morning sunlight and partial to full shade in the afternoon. This tree’s narrow, weeping form makes it a perfect accent for various garden settings, including the corners of buildings, entryways, city gardens, courtyards, conifer gardens, and rock gardens. As a spectacular focal point, the Nootka Cypress should not be crowded by other trees or shrubs. Instead, complement it with low-growing junipers and small perennials, such as coral bells, hellebores, anemones, astilbes, lithodoras, creeping phlox, and creeping myrtle. Spring bulbs like tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths can add early-season color, while nearby azaleas and flowering quince further enhance its beauty. Bring home the Cupressus nootkatensis 'Glauca Pendula' and enjoy the timeless elegance and unique beauty it brings to your garden for years to come.
