Cyanotypes were used by Edward Curtis in the field to determine if newly made negatives had the contrast, focus and quality he required. He developed negatives in the field, When dry, he placed a negative directly over Cyanotype paper until a positive image appeared on the Cyanotype paper. Cyanotypes were developed by sunlight. Cyanotype paper came in 8 inch wide rolls. Curtis tore off a piece 6 inches long to develop a Cyanotype When using a 6x8 inch negative. That ’s why the long sides of Curtis Cyanotypes may be slightly irregular. Curtis began using the Cyanotype process when the quality of Nitrate Cellulose negatives allowed him to use the smaller 6x8 inch negatives. All of the Curtis Cyanotypes we’ ve seen are 6x8 inches, or smaller. The backs of Curtis Cyanotypes were almost always marked with information about the Tribe and/or location of each photo. Most Curtis Cyanotypes are marked with a letter, followed by a number. That is how Curtis organized his field negatives and Cyanotypes.
