Description: Parody T-shirt design for the fictional Centralia, Pennsylvania Fire Department. For non-Pennsylvanians out there, allow me to summarize: Centralia was once a small coal mining town in the mountains of Central PA. Sadly the town was unfortunately evacuated and abandoned due to an ongoing anthracite coal mine fire which has been raging below the town since 1962. Pennsylvanians like myself regard this lost town as a quaint but sad artifact of our cultural legacy of the coal mining industry.I created this design myself as a tongue-in-cheek nod to the legacy of this small ghost town. Now you can LARP as a fictional firefighter for an abandoned coal mining town in Central Pennsylvania! Design details: the crest in the middle features a standard fire department Maltese Cross insignia, with a shovel and pickaxe as a nod to the coal mining industry. There’s also a pile of burning coal, a steam vent pipe, a spooky gas mask with a mining helmet, and a gold Eastern Cross from the steeple of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church up in the mountains – one of the few remaining structures in the ruins of the town. Centralia itself had a large population of Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and Yugoslavian immigrants working the coal mines prior to its abandonment, hence the Eastern Cross in the insignia also pays tribute to that. The main design on the front measures approximately 12.5 inches wide. This specific shirt only has the design on the front, however I also have a deluxe edition available in my store which has artwork on the sleeve and back too.These shirts are red, however I also have a black or navy shirt available in my store which have the same basic design. By the way: oddly enough, despite only being inhabited by a handful of people, Centralia actually does in fact have its own functional fire department (which clearly doesn’t see a lot of use), and its company number is 1 and engine number 134.
