Description: In Stock and Ready for Immediate Shipment! Long SOLD OUT at the Royal Canadian Mint! This affordable, pure gold proof features a pair of leaves from the beautiful Red Maple, with the lowest mintage limit of the series to date! The Red Maple (Acer rubrum, also known as Swamp or Soft Maple) is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees of eastern North America. It ranges from the Lake of the Woods on the border between Ontario and Minnesota, east to Newfoundland, south to near Miami, Florida, and southwest to eastern Texas. Many of its features, especially its leaves, are quite variable in form. At maturity the red maple often attains a height of around 80 feet (25 meters). It is aptly named as its flowers, petioles, twigs and seeds are all red to varying degrees. Among these features, however, it is best known for its brilliant deep scarlet foliage in autumn. Over most of its range, the red maple is adaptable to a very wide range of site conditions, perhaps more so than any other tree in eastern North America. It can be found growing in swamps, on poor dry soils, and most anywhere in between. Elevation is also not a limiting factor in its range, as it grows well from sea level to about 3,000 feet (900 meters). Due to its attractive fall foliage and pleasing form, the red maple is often used as a shade tree for landscapes. It is farmed commercially on a small scale for maple syrup production as well as for its medium to high quality lumber. It is also the State Tree of Rhode Island. This .9999 fine gold proof features an artistically rendered portrait of two red maple leaves. In addition to this affordable gold proof, Canada has also issued a long-running series of Silver Maple Leaf (SML) coins. The Red Maple Pure Gold Proof is the sixth in the ongoing smallest gold coins series from the Royal Canadian Mint. Technology Note The marvelous minting technology of the Royal Canadian Mint has brought us the world’s smallest pure gold coin, in a purity (99.99%) that puts other, larger gold coins to shame! Obverse The obverse features an artistic and minutely detailed depiction of two red maple leaves, in frosted cameo relief. The engraving on this gold piece is so well executed that with a loupe one can make out the fine veins of each leaf. The legends FINE GOLD 1/25 OZ and 9999 guarantee the weight and purity. Reverse Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in profile facing right. This portrait, the fourth effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian Coinage, was executed by the artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II, the date of issue and denomination also appear. Packaging The coin is encapsulated inside a burgundy leatherette, clamshell-style presentation case, lined with black velvet and protected by a black outer sleeve. An individually-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.
