Description: From a Normandy Park estate in Seattle, we are delighted to offer this vintage mid-century Chinese bamboo and wicker nesting picnic or wedding basket. This lovely basket features three finely woven, large removable stacking trays; and one stationary tray. Ebony color is woven into an intricate design. The long bamboo handle and posts reveal carvings of egrets, scholars and blooming florals. All symbols of virtue, strength and marital harmony and bliss. It is adorned with beautiful brass hardware, a brass handle designed with carved dragon heads. The solid brass fittings strengthen the basket, making it sound for holding heavy weighted items, such as gold and silver. Such a basket is used by a bride's family on her wedding day, filled with fine things to accompany her to her new home. The baskets are also used often for picnics or for carrying food to family gatherings. This is one of the largest of these baskets, measuring approximately 27.5” diameter x 21” high (to the top of the handle) x 12” deep. It weighs approximately 11 pounds and is gently used with no damage to the rattan. The brass shows signs of tarnish and there is a missing brass fitting at the bottom left side of a post. We appreciate your careful review of the photos as they tell so much more than we can articulate; and that you zoom in for a closer look at any and all condition issues.
