You're For Me (Mono Single Version) In 1962, Buck Owens had been a Capitol recording artist for five years: his career had risen steadily ever since the " release of his first Top Ten record, "Under Your Spell Again." in 1959. You're for Me was Buck’s third full-length LP for Capitol. Playing on this album was guitarist Don Rich, who’d joined Buck in Washington as a fiddle player, then relocated to Bakersfield after Buck moved back there in 1960. Buck and Don toured together for a while, hiring bands in each town they played in. Also on the albums’ sessions was Ralph Mooney, whose high-pitched, trebly steel guitar-style was just beginning to make him a legend. Along as well were other Bakersfield musicians; bassist Bobby Austin, pianist Jim Pierce and drummer Wayne “Moose” Stone. All the vocal harmonies on the album were Buck overdubbing his own harmony parts. Compiled from various recording sessions done in May, September and December of 1961, You're for Me included four of Bucks chart hits. “Under the Influence of Love,” written by Buck and his song smith friend Harlan Howard, reached number two on Billboard's charts in the Fall of 1961. "Nobody’s Fool But Yours’’ was Top Twenty early in 1962, although Buck had first recorded it in 1959. He re-cut the single version, which appears on this set, in 1961. Buck: "I was always lookin' for a cliché and that’s how I happened to write that.” The title track, which would become a #10 record for Buck early in '63, was nearly a decade old. Buck had written it in 1954 and Tommy Collins first recorded it, using it as the flip- side of his hit "Whatcha Gonna Do Now." Buck received a $500 royalty check and used it to help buy his first small house in Bakersfield. "It was the only time I’d ever seen $500,” says Buck, “and it also was the only chance I had to buy a house." This performance on "You're for Me" is significant for another reason: it marks the first appearance of the famous Owens' "freight train" sound, his trademark for the remainder of the decade. In 1988. Buck explained it this way: "I always had a lot of driving type music in my bones, I always loved music that had lots of beat. (I) always wanted to sound like a locomotive comin' right through the front room." The single’s flipside, the plaintive, sentimental "House Down the Block," was a lament of a broken marriage. The song reached #24, and was also a Buck original. "Down on the Corner of Love" was a remake of what had originally been Bucks first record in 1956, released on the tiny Pep label. "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall," penned by Buck and Don Rollins, featured an expressive Buck vocal with some impressive counterpoint from Ralph Mooney’s pedal steel. In the background, Don Rich plays mandolin-like trills on acoustic guitar. "Bad Bad Dream” was a standard shuffle: the shuffle beat first became popular on Ray Price’s 1956 hit "Crazy Arms." Not only was it Price’s trademark through the rest of his honky tonk career, it became a trademark of the early Bakersfield sound as well. Dwight Yoakam later used it frequently on hits like "Little Things." Two polka instrumentals feature Bucks fleet-fingered Telecaster picking. "Mexican Polka" and "Country Polka” were both recorded at the end of a September ’61 session; it took seventeen takes to nail "Mexican Polka," only eight for "Country Polka," both complemented by the sparkly piano tinkling of West Coast sideman George French, Jr. Things were just beginning to break in Buck’s career. The music found here was one more step toward legend. ~ Rich Kienzle SHIPPING TO USA ONLY Buyer Pays Shipping $3.99 1st CD $3.99... each additional $1.50 CDs will only be combined with other CDs or DVDs To qualify for the combined discount, all items must be purchased together, paid for with 1 payment, and shipped all together in 1 shipment.
