Ellen Clapsaddle, one of the most talented and prolific artists of vintage postcards, has provided this colorful lithographic illustration that celebrates Memorial Day. Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Notice Clapsaddle's signature at the lower-left edge. The colors are very vivid and the artistry is just great! Printed in pre-WWI Germany, and published by the International Art Publishing Co. (one of Clapsaddle's favorite publishers), this beautifully embossed card has been posted and has an unreadable date on the cancellation on its divided back.
