Short History: Jim DavisMr. Davis began working in the glass industry at age 16 and went on to work at Mid-Atlantic Glass in Ellenboro, West Virginia, for 46 years before retiring in 1990. After retirement, he launched Davis Handcut Glass and became the first person in Ritchie County to manufacture handmade marbles. He owned and operated Davis Handmade Marbles in Pennsboro and was a member of the Buckeye Marble Club, the West Virginia Arts and Crafts Guild, and the Country Roads Travel Council.Davis Marble Works, a short-lived company from Pennsboro, operated from 1947 to 1948 and produced glass toy marbles. Acquiring a marble machine from Corning Glass in 1946, previously used by Alley Agate, the company’s marbles are now considered among the rarest of West Virginia swirl marbles. With similarities to marbles from neighboring companies like Cairo Novelty, Jackson Marbles, Play-Rite Marbles, and Heaton Agates, Davis marbles are highly prized among collectors. Many of the marbles were shipped to Puerto Rico, making them difficult to find in the United States. However, they occasionally appear at estate sales, flea markets, and marble shows.Unfortunately James C. Davis, 77, of Pennsboro, passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2007, in Harrisville, West Virginia. Born on January 7, 1930, in Goffs, Ritchie County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late James W. and Minnie Amanda Davis.
