From the pictures one can tell the abuse this sad set from 1953 underwent before arriving here to be rehabbed. This is NOT a restoration by any means, but a rescue operation that turned out quite well! Views are now very nice, nearly indistinguishable from far better condition sets like my near mint 1956 model. Typical of the breed, the focuser was completely frozen. There was lots of white verdigris peppering the surface of the screw heads and edges of metal parts. It bubbled the (baked on?) oil based paint surfaces in areas. There was even more inside! I would guess these were once the pride and joy of the previous owner who had her name inscribed on the left prism cover. Most likely her Birding bin. Must've been left in a damp basement or some other storage area for quite some time. The prisms cleaned up nicely and we blacked the inner facing sides of both covered lower ones. Ought to slightly help offset whatever optical degradation results from the right objective damage to the balsam optical cement used on the doublets. This could be repaired! But needs the ministrations of a full service shop where the entire bino could then be correctly collimated once the doublet was taken apart, cleaned, and recemented. Or an entirely new replacement substituted. Meanwhile, views are so good that they could easily be used for years before being sent out for more work. Depending on how deep your pockets plunge, one could easily pay to have it look like Factory New. So if you've always pined for a classic Zephyr, or want one as a knock around set, maybe for hunting while your more pristine set is saved for other services, here is one at a good price.
