The painting shows patrol of one of Russian Bashkir Cossak regiments. In ranks of the Russian cavalry there were then fifteen Cossack regiments recruited from Bashkirs (inhabitants of Ural region), each containing 500 men (so-called "pyaty-solenny;"regiments) who were chiefly armed with lances and bows. In 1813, these troops especially participated in the sieges of the fortresses Danzig, Hamburg, Dresden, etc. After the end of the "Foreign Campaign" these regiments returned to Ural and were disbanded.
