Of his early career as a painter, he mostly drew the portraits of beauties and actors. �gFamous Places in the Eastern Capital�h, published in 1831, made him one of the mainstream ukiyoe painters in the era. He also succeeded in adopting the screen structures utilizing and contrasting perspective drawing, using deep azure tone called Hiroshige blue and shading. His masterpiece, �gThe Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido�h, started publishing in 1833, which became the best-known works of ukiyo-e. At his late life, he started working on the series of paintings, �gOne Hundred Famous Views of Edo�h, which his emotional attachment toward Edo was crystallized.
