Note: Theodosius I (Theodosius the Great), was Roman emperor from 379 to 395 AD. During his reign, he succeeded in a crucial war against the Goths, as well as in two civil wars, and was instrumental in establishing the creed of Nicaea as the orthodox doctrine for Christianity. Born in Hispania, Theodosius was the son of a high-ranking general, Theodosius the Elder, under whose guidance he rose through the ranks of the Roman army. He was appointed emperor by Gratian in 379 after the death of Valens in battle with the Goths. Theodosius took over the battle with the Goths and in 382 the Goths were allowed to settle south of the Danube as autonomous allies of the empire. In 386, Theodosius signed a treaty with the Sasanian Empire which partitioned the long-disputed Kingdom of Armenia and secured a durable peace between the two powers. Theodosius was the last emperor to rule the entire Roman Empire before its administration was permanently split between two separate courts (one western, the other eastern). Theodosius's final victory in September 394 made him master of the entire empire; but he died a few months later and was succeeded in a split empire by his two sons, Arcadius in the eastern half of the empire and Honorius in the west. Arcadius was Roman emperor from 383 to 408 AD. He was the eldest son of Theodosius I and his first wife Aelia Flaccilla, and the brother of Honorius. After the death of their father in 395, Arcadius ruled the eastern half of the empire, while Honorius ruled the west. He was considered a weak ruler and his reign was dominated by a series of powerful ministers and by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia. Exceprts from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
