Note: Termessos, was an amazing ancient town of Pisidia built at an altitude of more than 1000 metres at the south-west side of the mountain Solymos in the Taurus Mountains. The town lies 30 kilometres to the north-west of ancient Attaleia. It was founded on a natural platform on top of Güllük Dağı, soaring to a height of 1,665 metres from among the surrounding travertine mountains of Attaleia. The city was founded by the Solims who were mentioned by Homer in the Iliad in connection with the legend of Bellerophon who was considered the mythical founder of the city. He was a hero of Greek mythology called "the greatest hero and slayer of monsters, alongside Cadmus and Perseus, before the days of Heracles", and his greatest feat was killing the Chimera, a monster that Homer depicted with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail. Alexander the Great is known to have surrounded the city in 333 BC but in one of the very few cases of his reign he failed to conquer it owing to its strategic location and he is said to a have likened the city to an eagle's nest . Arrian, one of the ancient historians who dealt with this event and recorded the strategic importance of Termessos, notes that even a small force could easily defend it due to the insurmountable natural barriers surrounding the city. Concealed by pine forests and with a peaceful and untouched appearance, the site has a more distinct and impressive atmosphere than many other ancient cities and is also one of the best preserved of the ancient cities of Turkey. Because of its natural and historical riches, the city has been included in a national park bearing its name, the Mount Güllük-Termessos National Park. The district of Pisidia included all the mountainous country of Asia Minor between Phrygia and the north of Pamphylia and north-east of Lycia. Pisidia was not civilized in early times, as it possessed no means of communication with the sea, and the only town in the district which struck money before the time of Alexander the Great was Selge. In B.C. 39 Pisidia was bestowed by M. Antonius upon Amyntas, king of Galatia, who held it until his death in B.C. 25. In B.C. 6 Augustus founded a line of colonies, Antiocheia, Olbasa, Cremna, and Comama. Excerpts from Head, Hist.Num. and Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
