Description: This Portable radio was purchased my me in about !960. It was a kit from Heathkit in Benton Harbor, Michigan. I assembled the kit and used it daily. Since it is a discrete transistor unit, the 6 "D" cell batteries would last 500 to a thousand hours. My previous Vacuum tube radio had a battery life of 7 hours. In school the teacher would let me bring it to class so we could all listen to the World Series. It has some great memories. I have not used it for many years but hooked up a small 9 volt smoke detector battery to it and it still works. The volume was low but it was a small used battery. The steel chasis and heavy battery weight was hard on the cowhide handle and it finally broke. However all the pieces come with it so you can have one made or fix it. The rest of the cowhide case is in good shape for it's age. Somewhere I have all the assembly and instruction manuals and if and when I find them I will list them seperately. This Heathkit model XR-1 represents the beginning of a whole new age of the transistor. Heathkit brought it to the public in a great kit that gave you the satisfaction of making and then enjoying a state of the art product.
