Description: I'm Graham. I have had professional training in clock repair and restoration. Now retired, I restore antique clocks as a hobby. I specialise in antique carriage clocks. Occasionally I have the good fortune to acquire something a little bit special; and this little clock is certainly that. A few weeks back I was able to enjoy bringing it back to something resembling the state it was in when it was first made some 130 years ago. In truth I was very tempted to add it to my personal collection. AN IMMACULATE ANTIQUE FRENCH MINIATURE SILVER PLATED CARRIAGE CLOCK AND TRAVEL CASE Clock dimensions: Height (with handle folded down) 3 1/2 inches (9 cms); Width 2 3/8 inches (6 cms); Depth 2 inches (5 cms)CASE: Solid good quality silver-plated cast-brass in perfect original condition - the plating is wearing thin in one or two places where previous owner(s) seem to have been pretty liberal with the silver polish ! . All parts of the case are stamped with the same number (12), which shows it to be original. I dismantled it completely, cleaned off years of grime and tarnish then polished all the parts carefully by hand so as to preserve all the original features. I then gave them a coat of micro crystalline wax polish to protedt the finish and delay the tarnishing process in future. The clock now has a lustrous patina and looks much as it would have done when new.MOVEMENT: Well engineered solid brass and polished steel made I think, by Couaillet Freres in Paris at the end of the C19th. It is stamped MADE IN FRANCE at the bottom of the back plate. It still has its original compensated lever escapement. I completely dismantled it and checked it over carefully for wear. I cleaned all parts by hand, polished the pivots and wheels in the lathe, pegged out the sinks and after rebuilding the movement, oiled it with appropriate grade clock and watch oil. It is now working beautifully and should not need servicing again for years.DIAL: White enamel-on-copper in perfect original condition. After cleaning, the bold arabic numerals and chapter ring are crystal clear. Each five minute marker is picked out with a small red dot. In small lettering under the number 6 is written MADE IN FRANCE. The delicate blued steel hands are original and are in perfect condition. The dial is set behind a polished matt siver masking plate which I cleaned and wax polished: it is in perfect condition.GLASSES: All five bevelled glasses are in perfect condition.KEY: The clock has a fitted key for winding the movemenr and a small brass knob for adjusting the hands. The timekeeping can be adjusted by using the fast/slow index lever which is accessed through the rear door.TRAVEL CASE: Brown faux leather with a beige silk lining and two opening doors to the front which are closed with a small brass catch. It's in outstanding condition for its age (See more in the condition report above).CARE AND MAINTENANCE: I will enclose a brief note with the clock explaining how to get it started after its journey through the post. I will also include my contact details should you have any questions later about care. POSTAGE AND PACKAGING: Postage will be by a tracked and insured service. The clock will be packed in a sturdy box with plenty of bubble wrap and packaging pellets. UK £10.00; EU £20.00; ELSEWHERE £30.00.
