Notable history (see below) of the 30 years war and even then: Ukrania! Guest Editor: I, Harald Leuba, am listing this map on eBay with the permission of the eBay account holder, my wife of 56 years, Nancy Kingsbury, aka "Showjudge". She is worried about how to find homes for our "stuff" when I die -- > if I die before her. We have enjoyed living with this map in our collection, but as I age, (I am now 86), I feel that I ought to protect IT from becoming lost in some 2nd hand store and, more importantly, I need to protect Nancy from having to cope with how to harvest its reasonable value in a time of personal stress. [In other words: We are downsizing!]...... Frankly, I do not recall how I came onto possession of this map. [After all, I am 86 years old.] The above mentioned title is on the map in its cartouche. Pencil annotations in the margin say 213 in a circle in the upper left corner and “Nakskov, Letland, Denmark 1697 in the lower left hand corner. With a little patient searching on Google, I found an image (on eBay UK!) that corresponds exactly to the one we have here.[See the last photo, #7.] Description:“Having crossed from Jutland to Fyn (Funen) on the 30th January (9th February) 1658, and taken control of the island in one day, without serious opposition, Charles X Gustav started planning his next push towards his goal, Copenhagen, the Capital of Denmark.“On the 5th (15th) February he assembled his forces at Svendborg, south of Nyborg. At midnight they crossed the ice to the island of Tasinge. Island hopping the army reached Rudkobing, on Langeland at 7am. By midday they had reached Spodsbjerg. By 3 pm the first units landed on Tars on Lolland. By 5pm his whole army had crossed the Great Belt without the loss of one soldier, carriage or horse. The only major stronghold on Lolland was the fortress at Naskov. Charles had no intention of wasting time in besieging it, so he ordered one regiment of cavalry to blockade it. On the 7th (17th) February, to his surprise, the garrison capitulated without a shot fired. On the 8th (18th) February the first units of the Swedish army occupied Vordingborg on Sjaelland.“The engraving, with north orientated to the right, shows a birds-eye view of Naskov which, like Fredericia, was a modern, 3-bastioned fortress. It was well provisioned, had 40 cannons of various calibres and was defended by 150 regular soldiers and 1500 armed citizens.Plate 073“Background: In 1648, the Peace of Westphalia brought to an end the Thirty Years’ War and at the same time thwarted Sweden’s ambitions to control Baltic trade. Sweden was intent on gaining control of the whole of the Baltic trade (Dominium Maris Baltici) and the enormous customs duties deriving from it. All that was missing was control of the major ports on the southern coast of the Baltic or, alternatively, the Oresund, the gateway to the Baltic. A pre-emptive strike against Poland would isolate Prussia (east & west) forcing it to concede control of its ports, or at least pay Sweden a substantial amount of its income for ‘protection’. In July 1655 Karl X Gustav, King of Sweden, declared war and invaded the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania, giving rise to the 2nd Northern War, known in Poland as ‘The Deluge’. The Commonwealth was already weakened by fighting on two front; In the Ukraine it was attempting to suppress a war of independence whilst in the east Russian forces were overrunning Lithuania and Belarus. By superior tactical use of infantry and artillery, within the space of 4 months Karl X Gustav had overrun the whole of the area of present day Poland and forced the Polish King, Jan II Casmir, to flee the Country. All but a handful of the major stronghold gave up with just token resistance, the notable exceptions being Gdansk, Przemysl, Zamosc and Czestochowa.“Two years later 'having conquered the Country but not the people' Karl X Gustav recieved information that the Danes had declared war on Sweden. Leaving some of his forces to hold various strongholds in Poland Karl X Gustav took 6000 of his most seasoned troops and marched to Denmark. “This engravings comes from the book: “De Rebus a Carolo Gustavo Sueciae Rege Gestis Commentariorum Libri Septem elegantissimis Tabulis Aeneis exornati (Sieben Bucher von denen Thaten Carl Gustavs Konigs in Schweden)Author: Pufendorf. S. Von,Published: Nuremberg, Christoph RiegelDate: 1696The book is an account of the life and deeds of Charles Gustav during his reign as King of Sweden from 1654 to 1660.Engraver: De La Pointe. Francois,Drawn by: Dahlbergh. Erik von,Condition: Very good. The plate has been cleaned and pressed by a professional conservator and is ready for framing.Color: UncolouredSize (h x w): 35 x 41.5 cm (approx. sheet size)Technique: Copper plate Scarce“Samuel Pufendorf (1632-94): A German jurist and historian, he is especially noted as an early theorist of international law. In his later years, he served as royal historiographer at Stockholm and Berlin.“Erik Dahlbergh (1625-1703): A Swedish field marshal, military engineer and cartographer, Count Dahlbergh was the author of a number of topographical works including the maps and plans in a famous account of the military exploits of the Swedish King, Charles X Gustav by Samuel Pufendorf. From July 1656 he served with the Swedish forces as military engineer and his engravings are that much more valuable in that they were made as an 'eyewitness'. The engravings are scarce and have great historic as well as artistic value showing as they do plans and elevations of towns & castles as well as the costumes of the period.“NB: A papal bull, dated 24th February 1582 (Pope Gregory XIII), decreed that 10 days should be dropped from the calendar in October 1582. Thus October 15th should follow immediately after October 4th, and from then on the reformed calendar should be used. Sweden changed from the Julian calendar to that of the Gregorian in 1753. Since Dahlbergh was Swedish and also prepared all the drawings for the monumental history of Charles X Gustav of Sweden the dates on the engravings are, naturally, according to the Julian calendar.Ref: JJB2179My Comment: If you are interested enough in maps to be considering an original one of this value, you know that the plates for antique maps were often reused/reprinted/-recycled/revised and that there are many different (related) versions available today. You will also know that maps were not usually stand-alone images. They appeared in bibles, histories, as here, and even in atlases! But, setting all of that aside: This map has only one source and it exists in only one state. No one collects “Nackschouia”, and very few of us remember the 30 year’s war, so it’s not surprising that a copy of this map fetched only $17 at auction in 2017-----But now, with the story told in the UK eBay listing, and the current WAR in the Ukraine, we can all take a pause and value what happened in “Nackschouia” 364 years ago!Last month, Barry Ruderman came to our house to look at our maps with a view to his acquiring the whole collection. He was warmly professional and lived up to his reputation for expertise. He said that our maps had been well cared for and were in good condition. He put an estimated market value on this map of $xxxx.--> if he were to offer it for sale in his business. {Of course, since he has to make a profit in his business, he did not offer me that much!} I am listing this map here for the SAME price as the listing in the UK. Take a look and Buy it Now, or make an offer......Our map has not been framed. It has been protected by being kept flat in a plastic sleeve album. Our map is uncolored. The image is clear and clean; the paper is flat; there is no damage to the margins, and only the foxing one would expect after 364 years! Please help us find a new home for this treasure. Thank you for looking. Harald & Nancy P.S. Inflation? NO! When I bought my first map, there was silver in our US coinage. When I was in college, I could buy a gallon of gas for a silver quarter and mail a letter home for 4ç. I can STILL buy a gallon gas for the value of that silver quarter, but postage is now 60ç. Antique maps have doubled in price in the last ten years. Are they a store of value? I think so, but whether they are or not, they can be a permanent source of pleasure. P.P.S We are using the proceeds of this sale, not to add “dollars” to our bank account, but to support local charities (to help neighbors who have lost income due to covid)! We hope you enjoy your purchase, and have warm feeling from helping others,
