Description: Antique Indonesian Islamic Shield Sultanate Of Aceh to sword Keris Kris Click images to enlarge Description Rare antique 19th century Indonesia West Sumatra, Islamic Sultanate of Aceh wooden parrying Shield - buckler known as Peurise Kajee. from the period of Aceh War which began in 1873 . Acehnese War, (1873–1904), an armed conflict between the Netherlands and the Muslim sultanate of Aceh (also spelled Acheh, or Atjeh) in northern Sumatra that resulted in Dutch conquest of the Acehnese and, ultimately, in Dutch domination of the entire region. The shield of the circular domed form has been hand carved from single piece of light wood applied on the surface with seven large, brass, six-pointed stars, (Seal of Solomon – Khātim Sulaymāni خاتم_سليمان ) engraved with palmette and scroll motifs each with a central dome. Twelve brass studs in the form of the domed rosettes fil space of the field. The outer edge is decorated with inlaid brass wire arrayed in repeated V shaped pattern. Four small brass rings attached to the concave reverse would have allowed rope or straps to be pulled through so that the shield could be worn over the forearm. CONDITION: In incredibly good condition showing the age and use. The surface of the wood showing under dark paint cross grain shrinkage of the wood which uppers over its more than a century life. All the brass adornments including brass wire inlaid are intact. MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 22 cm (8.66 inches). Klein Nagelvoort, Researcher and Author of the book “Toean Stammeshaus” gives some insight with his research on Aceh weapons. According to Stammeshaus the 7 stars are meant for military leaders or in the Aceh language Panglima’s and the version with 5 stars for regular warriors.
