The Pratt factory produced wares with Greek themes almost the whole period that they operated. They operated from Fenton in Stoke on Trent and were established in 1818.The very earliest items that they produced were the large twin handled urns, they were similar in shape to some of the finds that were being discovered in Greece and being sent around the world to be placed in museums. It is reported that the Pratts produced in the 1850s the largest one piece urn to ever been made in England. This urn was purchased by Prince Albert about the same time of the 1851 Great Exhibition. He granted F & R Pratt a Royal Warrant for their excellent displays of pottery shown at that Exhibition. The pictures on these were themes from Greek myths, mainly copied from John Flaxmans famous drawings. On the death of Prince Albert in December 1861 they could no longer mark their wares with the Royal Warrant backstamp. They produced pieces with Greek themes, many not having any backstamp of the producer, then about the 1880s they marked many of their wares with backstamps such as " PRATTS OLD GREEK " and other marks. Further on they gave the firm of Maws pharmaceutical the right to distribute their Greek wares, at first the backstamp was " Maws " then later on the backstamp became the Discus Thrower mark. Maws distributed the Pratt wares to the USA and Australia in vast amounts and possibly many other countries. ( Snk Rm )
