Description: Just taken in on a trade from good friend and customer. This early booster amp was recently powered on -- brought up on a variac and tested with a small “driver” 6V6 amp. See video. We are selling it as transformers guaranteed, for parts or restoration. Lite oxidation and plenty of lite dust and dirt to clean, and missing faceplate, needs line cord (recommend to face down on table and use rubber feet anyway) . Cool amp -- but only experienced DiY’ers not afraid of high voltage should consider this one!! Century- a company that sold complete sound and projector systems,(along with Simplex and Motiograph) This is a model W5-16 - Made by Altec using in house Peerless transformers. This was the late 1940’s as Western Electric divested from their theater sound audio products. This W5-16 very compact booster amp, spec’d at up to 35 watts…. Just a booster amp (no voltage or driver stage) designed to bulk up the power available to medium and large theaters of the 1940s. The input transformer is 20 ohms and intended to be driven by a smaller amplifier, of your choice, or perhaps a Line amp or Preamp with alot of gain… This might be very cool for adding power to a favorite flea power amp, or driving woofers and subwoofers from otherwise low power Single Ended 45 or 300B systems -- the utility is endless on this amp… quality is super high, and the parts are rare . This amp, though only about 7” high in the rack -- is the most powerful amp in the late 1940s list, below the 200lb Altec 287F ! (the biggest amp Altec made, based on a Western Electric design)) Loaded up with very early 1940s Peerless / Altec Red/White/Blue transformers… Uses powerful 807 tubes with high voltage plate caps… Cleaning and certainly small repairs might make it perfect. Nice tubes, are included Cosmetics are fair to good. Many areas of paint have some oxidation -- and areas of blemish. Transformer decals are all there and present. (with way more horsepower than you need). And, it does sound nice --- just be careful!! See our 100% feedback, to be assured SAFE PACKING & DELIVERY.
