Mahogany case that features bonnet with pierced fretwork joining three plinths supporting brass ball and steeple finials. Arched glazed dial door flanked by fluted full columns with brass stop fluting. Paneled molded pendulum door in grain mahogany. Sides of trunk with fluted quarter columns with brass caps and brass stop fluting. Pendulum door with base panel with string inlay resting on ogee bracket feet. Painted iron dial with four spandrel areas decorated with floral designs with Roman numberals. A Bird with leaves and florals is located in the center arch of the dial flanked by gold painted scrolled designs. Signed on the face "Aaron Willard" Boston . The movement is constructed in brass and is good quality, the bell strikes on each hour on the hour, which is done on a cast iron bell which is mounted above the movement. Clock includes weights, pendulum and winder. About the maker: Aaron Willard was born in Grafton, Massachusetts on 10/13/1757. He learned the skill of clock making from his older brothers Benjamin and Simon. In 1780, Aaron Willard moved from Grafton to Roxbury with his brother Simon. In Roxbury, the Willard brothers established reputations as fine clock makers. During the early nineteenth century, the Willard brothers dominated the clock making industry in Massachusetts. Condition Report: A fine example of an early Aaron Willard Roxbury Clock Case is in very good antique condition with minor flaking to edges of the dial and dial crazing, Fretwork has been replaced. Finials are older brass. The clock currently does not run, has a loose minute hand, hour hand and bells strike work, needs maintained and service. We do not guarantee the working conditions of clocks and highly recommend hiring a professional clock person to clean, service and install the clock after delivery. Shows beautifully.
