Description: Offered for sale is a woodblock diptych print designed by Junichiro Sekino (1914 to 1988). The print consists of two joined bookplates from the book titled "Yagura daiko". The "Yagura daiko" was published in 1969 in a single limited edition of 480 copies. The publisher, printer and block cutter are unidentified. The title of the book is roughly translated from the Japanese as "drumming atop a tower or scaffold" and refers to the ceremonial drumming that accompanies Sumo wrestling matches. The "Yagura daiko" was Sekino's pictorial and literary tribute to the venerable world of Sumo. To quote Dieter Wanczura, the proprietor of artelino.com, the renowned online Japanese print auction house based in Germany, "Junichiro Sekino was one of the giants of Japanese printmaking in the twentieth century and a leading promoter of "Sosaku Hanga" - an important Japanese art movement. "Sosaku Hanga" was an art movement that began in the early twentieth century. It was influenced by the modernest aesthetics of the West and influenced as well by the Western notion of the artist as the solitary creator. As such, many "Sosaku Hanga" artists adopted the concept of "jiga, jikoku and jizuri", or "self-drawn, self-carved and self-printed". Sekino was a master of this concept." Sekino is perhaps best know among collectors for his series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido", as well as for his masterful portraits of contemporary artists and celebrities, children and animals. The print is in fine condition with no condition issues. It is printed on fine pale beige-colored paper. Sekino's red seal is stamped on the lower left-hand corner of the printed image. The two bookplates were joined with consummate skill by the printer such that the edges of the printed images meet in an exact manner. The print measures 11 11/16" by 14 3/4".
