Description: Please see photograph, an original and seldom seen Aberdeen Printer's 'Galley' proof, printed in 1870. Size 5 x 11 cm approx. Column width approximately 6.75 cm. Dust soiling, browning and a pencil tick on the front. Glue remnants on back. Printed on quality laid paper with vertical chain lines watermark. Dated at Aberdeen, so this would most likely have been printed by an Aberdeen printer. The Farm of Pitgaveny, on the Estate of Thornton, Parish of Bourtie. Mr. Moir, Mains of Thornton, will point out the boundaries of the farm... The term 'Galley Proof' originates from the metal trays called galleys, in which the type was painstakingly hand set using wooden or metal blocks. They were then used to make single-column pages of type, named proofs. Proofs were the preliminary versions of the required text, which would be reviewed by the person or organisation who had commissioned the article or advertisement, in this case. If corrections were needed, the printer would have to rearrange the blocks in the galley, prior to printing again. The finished notice, when accepted and printed, may have been destined for a newspaper column, or as a poster / broadside for a notice board, or both. The proofs that I have were likely saved from destruction and collected by the printer or someone else who worked there. For combined postage - please ask for invoice before paying.
