19th Century Jacob Haish Wire Cane

Description: c. 1850s/1860s; Jacob Haish Manufacturing Co. - Dekalb, IL Antique promotional cane or walking stick crafted from heavy fence wire. This piece advertises Jacob Haish's wire company, one of the original inventors of barbed wire in the 19th century United States. Haish, an immigrant from Grand Duchy of Baden, or Baden Palatinate, a former state of Germany along the Rhine. After coming to America, he settled in Dekalb and made a name for himself, along with Joseph Glidden and Isaac Ellwood, by creating the first true barbed wire. This item was likely given out as a free promotional item and features heavy wire construction and an embossed brass tag with Haish's company information. Exhibits minor signs of wear including minimal rust. 36" L Please refer to photos regarding condition.
