Sampras had a tumultuous tournament, as his coach Tim Gullickson had to leave Australia to seek emergency medical treatment for a blood clot in his brain. This proved to be fatal. Sampras broke down emotionally, weeping uncontrollably in his QF win over Jim Courier. After losing an 8-6 tiebraker to Agassi in the third set of the final, Sampras was unable to rally his reserves and was defeated 6-4 in the fourth set.
