His parents were chamberlain Anders Berch and Regina Catharina Tersmeden, and brother Carl Reinhold Berch. Berch was enrolled at Uppsala University in 1726 where he studied until 1731 when he was employed at the Commercial College. In 1741, he received the newly established professorship in economic law and state economics in Uppsala, whose activities began in the Theatrum Oeconomicum the same year. Three years later, he was elected to the Academy of Sciences. In 1734 he married Johanna Helbeck. Their son Christer (1730-1792) became a professor after his father, the son Anders Berch the younger (1736-1770) was a famous proponent of the ideas of the Enlightenment and the politics of the hats. Berch was the Nordic region's first professor of economics and the one who wrote Sweden's first economics textbook. As an economist, Berch represented mercantilism, the cameralism advocated in universities in Germany, and the British political arithmetic. In Sätt at gegen Politisk Arithmetica utronna länders og Rikens Hushåldning (1746) he writes that it is better if there is a shortage of land than of people, and he advocated crafts over agriculture. It was the artisans who ensured that money came into the country, Berch believed, and therefore the happiness of the bourgeoisie was superior to that of the regent if there was a conflict as to whose interests should be considered. On that basis, he advocated a state-regulated economy and trade, when politicians had knowledge of society that the bourgeoisie lacked. A nice clean copy! Gift quality. FORN-SHELF-0677-BB-0524-HK1525
