Description: Don Mattingly is one of the most beloved and respected former players in the history of Major League Baseball. He played 14 seasons in the Majors and is best known for his time with the New York Yankees. Mattingly made his Major League debut in 1982 and quickly established himself as one of the best players in the game. He won the American League batting title in 1984, batting .343 with 207 hits and 35 home runs. In 1985, Mattingly was named American League MVP after leading the Yankees to a first-place finish in the American League East. He also won the Gold Glove Award that season. In 1986, Mattingly was once again named an All-Star and won the batting title with a .352 average. He was also selected to the American League All-Star team in 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990. Mattingly's career took a downturn in 1991 when he suffered a back injury that would keep him out of the Yankees' lineup for the remainder of the season. He was able to return to the team in 1992 but was never able to recapture the success he had enjoyed in the mid-1980s. Mattingly retired in 1995 and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997. He is remembered as one of the greatest players in Yankees history, and his #23 jersey has been retired by the team. He currently serves as bench coach for the Miami Marlins.
