The story of the year was the return of Yankee Pride. After getting swept in the 76 Series, and a summer of slayings and brown outs in the Big Apple, New Yorkers needed something to cheer about, and they got it in Reggie Jackson. The Yankees were pushed by the Orioles and Red Sox all summer, but led the AL east from mid-August on. The Royals sputtered for half the season before blowing the rest of the AL West out of the water, but fell apart within three outs of going to their first World Series in one of the best 5 game LCS ever played. Rod Carew won the MVP and batting title hitting an obscene .388, Jim Rice led in HR in the first of three monster seasons for the future Hall of Famer, and Oriole great Eddie Murray made his debut winning the ROY, Sparky Lyle took home a rare reliever Cy Young. In the NL the Dodgers broke the Reds death lock on the NL West, besting the Big Red Machine by 10 games, and the Phillies had what may have been their best regular season in history winning 101 games. George Foster snapped the 50 HR drought, pounding 52 HR and 149 RBI while maintaining a .320 batting average. Steve Carlton won another Cy Young. The Dodgers, after falling to the Phightins in Game 1 of the LCS swept their way into the World Series once again to face their old roomates from New York in the Fall Classic, The Yankees took game 1, Burt Hooton pitched a nice first game to get the Dodgers evened up. The Yankees took 3 and 4, Dodger staved off elimination in Game 5 by jumping all over Yankee free-agent Don Gullet, taking a 10-0 lead before winning 10-4. Game 6 would be all REG-GIE however. Chambliss homered to get the Yankees on the board, but Reggie homered off three consecutive pitches and drove in five runs as the Yankees won their first title since 1962 and fielded one of the most colorful championship teams in baseball history.
