Christmas - General (Russian greeting for the season). Moscow, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. These are the official seasons greeting cards for 1956 issued by the Soviet Union postoffice. At left, a white-bearded, blue frocked gentleman with a pack on his back is called "Grandfather Frost" but not even the Kremlin can disguise Santa Claus. At right a Russian mother and child carry home a tree which will be decorated on New Year's eve and topped, of course, with the red star. Most of the cards bear the inscription "C Novyn Godom" which translated literally to "with the New Year" or "New Year Greetings".Photo measures 9 x 7.25inches. Photo is dated 12-11-1956.
