Description: 1926 double-sided bronze plaquette International Philatelic Exhibition New York presentation medal "Awarded to Thomas H. Lee, Jr." in the original "Medallic Art Co. New York" Box. Both the box and the medal are in exceptional condition. Width is 3 1/2" and height (at its highest point) is 2 1/8" This medal was designed by Emil Fuchs, a famous Austrian/American sculptor and medallist who moved to New York City after World War I. The Obverse side shows the New York City skyline with two steamboats. The reverse side of the medal depicts America (Lady Columbia) descending steps leading from the US Capitol (in the background) surrounded by figures representing other nations of the world. The artist's (Emil Fuchs) initials are in the design at the extreme left of the reverse -- "EF." I believe this medal was awarded to one of the winning exhibiters who competed in 20 different exhibition categories (650 total exhibits). The 1926 IPEX was a grand 8-day affair (October 16-23) and only the second event of its kind (the first IPEX was held in 1913). The total value of the stamps exhibited was estimated at over $10,000,000 and included the famous British Guiana stamp that was then owned by Arthur Hinds (the first time the legendary stamp was displayed in the United States). From the White House, President Calvin Coolidge turned a golden key that was connected to the Grand Central Palace, formally opening the exhibition. Thousands of collectors lined up to view 800 frames, which each held 30 pages. This plaquette is made of solid bronze and was likely awarded to a 3rd place winner (they also had gold and silver awards). Free Domestic Shipping - Not a reproduction. This is an original item.
