Description: 1909-1911 T206, Old Mill (SL) Southern League - Harry Bay, Nashville - SGC 2.5 On the Card & Back - The Southern League cards are a popular (and difficult to find) subset of the T206 collection, featuring 48 players from four minor leagues: the Texas, South Atlantic, Virginia, and Southern Association. These cards come with three different backs: Piedmont 350 (the most common), Old Mill (rarer and more sought after), and Brown Hindu (the rarest of the three). On the Player - Harry Elbert “Deerfoot” Bay (1878–1952) was a talented outfielder known for his remarkable speed. Contemporaneous newspaper accounts labeled Bay “a ten-second man in the 100-yard dash.” Bay began his MLB career with the Cincinnati Reds (1901–1902), before moving to the Cleveland Bronchos/Naps (1902–1908), where he twice led the American League in steals, in 1903 and 1904. In 1905, Bay injured his knee catching fly balls on a muddy field. The knee injury slowed him for the remainder of his career. Bay ended his major league play in 1908, with a career slash line of .273/.328/.336, and accumulating 10.7 WAR. By May 1908, Bay was playing minor league ball for the Nashville Vols in the Southern Association, earning the adoration of the local fans with his spirited play. Bay continued minor league play for various teams before retiring from baseball in 1917. Set information - The 1909-1911 T206 set is considered by many as the most important baseball card set in the hobby field. Together with the 1933 Goudey and 1952 Topps sets, the T206 completes the “Big Three” classic baseball card sets. Affectionately named “The Monster” based on its 524-card size, the T206 is home to some of the most valuable vintage baseball cards, including the famed T206 Honus Wagner rarity.
