Description: Designed by Charles E. Barber, the Liberty Head nickel of 1883-1912 bears a classic portrait of Liberty, which was based on a Greco-Roman marble sculpture. Liberty is surrounded by stars representing the original 13 colonies, and the date is seen below. The reverse features a large Roman numeral V (five) encircled by a wreath of wheat, corn and cotton. During its years of issue, the Liberty Head nickel was a very handy piece of change, as many products were priced at 5¢ apiece.
