Description: I have here for sale a book entitled SCARLET AND HYSSOP by E F BENSON published by D Appleton and Company, New York, in 1902. It is a First USA Edition. Here we have a novel from prolific English author, memoirist, biographer, and historian Edward Frederic Benson (1867-1940). Benson was a precocious writer. His first book was "Sketches from Marlborough", published whilst he was a student. He started his novel writing career with the then fashionably controversial "Dodo" (1893) and followed it with a variety of satire, romantic, and supernatural melodrama. He is also well known for his Mapp and Lucia series consisting of 6 novels and 2 short stories, as well as the David Blaize series.Red cloth boards with a black linear design, black lettering and an illustration of a woman's head on the front board. Gilt lettering and a black linear design on the spine. Marks and wear to the boards with rubbing to the corners. Some fading to the spine with fraying at the top, bottom and along the hinges. Some bleeding of the dye onto the endpapers with some light foxing. Slight yellowing to borders of pages. Front hinge cracked but all pages are firm and the book is in very good condition. 374 pages, plus publisher's catalogue 6 pages. 19.5 x 13 cm. We have been very lucky to have acquired a collection of EF Benson book, both his fiction and non-fiction works. They will all be appearing, or have already appeared, on EBay.
