Description: 1887 N174 Old Judge Cigarettes card of John Lawrence Sullivan (October 15, 1858 – February 2, 1918),. He is recognized as the first heavyweight champion of gloved boxing, a title that he held from February 7, 1882 (when he defeated then world champion Paddy Ryan (see below) until September 7, 1892. Sullivan was a cultural icon of the late 19th century and arguably the first boxing superstar and one of the world's highest-paid athletes of his era. Also offered in this dual card lot is the card of Paddy Ryan from the same 1887 set. Ryan claimed the title of "World's Heavyweight Champion" in 1880 but lost to John L. Sullivan in 1882, the last time a championship would be won in the bare knuckle style. A scarce pair of 135+ year-old collectibles. Both cards feature an appealing high-contrast image with very moderate spotting on front and back (see scans for detail).
