Description: A Glimpse of Mt. Washington. 1869 This is a lovely steel engraving which is over 150 years old! It measures 7.5 x 11 inches in size. The sheet has a small age spot along its blank left edge, and a faint dampstain in part of the blank top center edge (see photos). However, neither affect the image, and the engraving is in excellent and attraction overall condition. It presents an appealing view of a tree-lined river in the foreground, with New Hampshires Mt. Washington in the distance. A couple ducks are skimming along the water and a canoe is on the shore, with small figures of two Indians resting nearby. The view is based on a painting by John Frederick Kensett (1816-1872), a member of the National Academy; and engraved by Robert Hinshelwood (1812-1879). It was distributed with the May 29, 1869, issue of Appletons Journal, a weekly publication which was founded in 1869 and achieved a shortlived national popularity, but eventually went out of business in 1881. It was part of a series Appletons issued in 1869-1870, which the editors previewed by saying, . . . it is our design to offer to the readers of this journal . . . we hope to include specimens of all the leading American paintings. . . . The collection, in due time, will become not only a varied series of illustrations of our mountain, river, and coast scenery, but a choice gallery of American art.
