Description: Up for your consideration is this beautiful porcelain rea cup and saucer matching set recovered off the wreck of the Ca Mau. The cup and saucer are in excellent condition with just a couple very minor flea bites on rim of cup but no major visible cracks or chips. No repairs or restoration. Both are individually labeled with their Sotheby's auction house stickers that ensure their authenticy. The Ca Mau shipwreck refers to a Chinese cargo sunken sometime between 1723 and 1735 off the coast of Vietnams farthest point in the South China Sea, discovered by Vietnamese fishermen in 1998. It is believed the wreck was a Chinese merchants junk on its way from Canton (Guangzhou) to Batavia when it caught fire and sank. The merchant had ordered the goods on board for Dutch traders, who had limited access to China and its ports. The Ca Mao shipwreck cargo consisted of numerous types of porcelain, chinaware and blue and white wares, all designed for the European market. Dating has always been the most challenging aspect when researching a shipwreck site. However, with the Ca Mau shipwreck archaeologists have been lucky. Coins dating from the Kangxi Period (1662-1722) have been recovered from the wreck conclusively dating the site. Check out my feedback and bid with confidence! Also, please be sure to check out my other shipwreck related items including shipwreck coins, and items related to Mel Fisher's ATOCHA and the 1715 Fleet!
