You are bidding on 12 SOUTHERN LIVE OAK ACORNS - Quercus virginiana . A common tree of the south east covered with Spanish moss . The name live oak comes from the fact that evergreen oaks remain green and "live" throughout winter, when other oaks are dormant, leafless and "dead"-looking. Hardiness Zones: 7b-10 Site Requirements: Sun; range of soil types; tolerates moist and compacted clay soil Height: 30 to 50' Width: 50 to 80' Fruit: .7 to 1" acorn Medicinal use of : The bark is astringent. A decoction has been used in the treatment of dysentery. A decoction of the wood chips or the bark has been applied externally as an astringent analgesic to treat aches and pains, sores and hemorrhoids. Any galls produced on the tree are strongly astringent and can be used in the treatment of hemorrhages, chronic diarrhea, dysentery etc. Edible parts of : Seed - raw or cooked. Low in tannin, it has a sweet flavor. The seed is usually produced in clusters of 3 - 5 and is about 25 mm long and 10 mm wide. It is about 12 mm long . It can be dried, ground into a powder and used as a thickening in stews etc or mixed with cereals for making bread. The seed contains bitter tannins, these can be leached out by thoroughly washing the seed in running water though many minerals will also be lost.An edible oil obtained from the seed is used for cooking. The roasted seed is a coffee substitute. Other uses : Wood - very heavy, hard, strong, tough, close grained but difficult to work. It weighs 59 lb per cubic foot. It is used for making hubs, cogs, shipbuilding etc. A very good fuel.
